Same sex marriage has triumphed in the United States on June 26, 2015! We are hoping that more counties are soon to follow in doing the right thing and seeing LGBT people as respected and as equals to the heterosexuals.
Let’s take a look at the original same sex marriage equality movement which happened in California on June 16, 2008. The Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges pushed LGBT equality to be what it has become today!
Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi
In 2008, many gay couples rushed to finally tie the knot in California. Among those couples were Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi! They have been together since 2004 and got married on August 16, 2008.
George Takei and Brad Altman
We all know this couple! George Takei and Brad Altman have been together for 29 years (the moment of this article), and have been married since Sept 14, 2008.
Future For LGBT Equality
There’s no doubt that LGBT equality has been on the rise in the United States. Although we are still fighting for LGBT rights every day, those who came before us made it much easier for this generation and the future generations.
Today, we can glance at the television or read a newspaper to see real examples of LGBT couples and how they lead their lives. Never before have we seen as many television shows with LGBT characters who can serve as role models to LGBT youth.
More and more famous people are coming out of the closet and announcing that they are also a part of the LGBT community. The LGBT people are represented in tv shows, movies, real life situations, the less heterosexual people will see it as something weird or perverse. After all, all we want is to live a happy life with a person we love, just like everyone else.
